Yesterday, today, for as long
as forever lasts and no longer,
that is the teasing promise of
the garden changing from season
to season, seed to bud to bloom,
to decay and back again to earth.
No more or less than the beauty
of the artichoke in its raised bed,
even though dead and dried up,
it stands still and needs no praise
as its new green generation
arises from the dead in autumn.
