A Fan Falls
by James Keller

Preparing food in the kitchen,
suddenly, memory restores
a stage-struck teenager
in Australia in the mid-sixties
of the last century, I am seeing
the ballet 'Yugen' based on a folktale
from Japan. The Moon Goddess, poised
to catch a fan from a fisherman,
dropped it.

Fifty years on, it is the fan
I remember now, but
somehow the fan does not fall,
but inscribes an arc of memory
spanning time and space
as it passes from hand to hand.
